Reducing Friction with an Onion-Like Carbon Material

Researchers from Argonne National Laboratory have developed a new material that provides near-zero friction. To inform the design of the material, the researchers carried out simulations on the ALCF’s Mira supercomputer to elucidate its behavior at the nanoscale. Using the LAMMPS code, the team’s large-scale atomistic simulations revealed molecular insights into a mechanical stress-induced tribochemical reaction that led to superlubricity.
