Energy & the Industrial Revolution: Past, Present & Future

Arun Majumdar
Seminar

As we work to develop clean, sustainable and innovative approaches to our nation’s greatest energy challenges, Argonne researchers are constantly seeking new insights into the future of the global energy economy. The laboratory is pleased to welcome Director’s Special Colloquium speaker Arun Majumdar, who will give a presentation on “Energy & the Industrial Revolution: Past, Present & Future.”

Dr. Majumdar, a recognized leader in energy innovation, drives energy initiatives at Google.org (the company’s charitable arm) and advises the company on its broader energy strategy. Before joining Google in December 2012, Dr. Majumdar served as Acting Undersecretary of Energy and as founding Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency—Energy (better known as ARPA-E).

In this talk, Dr. Majumdar will discuss the “false choice” that pits the goal of expanded economic development against the need for environmental protection. Instead, he believes that a new industrial revolution is under way that will make a sustainable energy future not only possible, but absolutely necessary for future economic growth.

Dr. Majumdar has played a key role in shaping strategic initiatives designed to create and develop transformative new technologies in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and energy storage. His work at ARPA-E has led to substantial federal investments in high-potential, high-impact energy technologies that are not yet ripe for private sector investment – including a number of research efforts here at Argonne.
